Thoughts: sunday nights / family back home / Mt Solitary Ultra
Ever been too excited to sleep leading in to a big event?
I got the nickname Mountain Monkey from my brother in law the night before our relay race at the Melbourne Marathons. A couple of bananas, talk of training through the trails and me bouncing of the walls with excitement earned me this illustrious name.
Tonight i feel a little the same after a strong dusk run to Merewether. For me, the Mount Solitary Ultra marks a turning point in my running and fitness. Not two years ago I was enlivened by a 5km run. Now that distance stretches beyond a marathon, and if i can make it through, i have no idea how far i can really go. That’s exciting, to be let off the leash of limitation, free to explore the breaking point.
But the key lesson from me after the Ironman is to temper this excitement and prepare diligently. Eating well, sleeping adequately and mentally preparing for the estimated 7 hours on the trail are all critical to getting through.
Have you run an ultra marathon before?
Any suggestions for or tails from your first attempt?
